How to Maintain Your Fiberglass Ladder

Ladders are the workhorse of many trade industries and businesses. So when you buy ladders, you are essentially making an investment. You want to maintain your tools so they will last as long as possible.

The average lifespan of a fiberglass ladder depends on many factors; where the ladder is stored, the locations the ladder is used, the way the ladder is handled, and whether you regularly clean it.

Moisture
For wood and fiberglass ladders, moisture can accelerate the surface degradation, particularly in warm climates. Fiberglass is not as porous as wood, however it can absorb moisture to some degree. A fiberglass ladder that is NOT maintained may last one to three years. But the lifetime of the fiberglass ladder can be increased by periodically washing and waxing it.

Waxing
Periodically washing and waxing your fiberglass ladder can increase its lifespan. We recommend using a carnauba wax, but any wax used for vehicles will work well on fiberglass ladders. A wax specifically formulated for use on fiberglass would be the best. A waxed surface will protect your fiberglass ladder from moisture; however waxing will not protect the fiberglass surface from ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.

UV Radiation
Exposing a fiberglass ladder to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can also accelerate its surface deterioration. You can protect the fiberglass coating from penetrating UV rays by coating the fiberglass ladder with an acrylic lacquer or polyurethane.  Then periodic washing and waxing will greatly increase the lifespan of your fiberglass ladder.

Caring and maintaining your tools and equipment are an essential part of owning them. When you invest and buy a quality fiberglass ladder, you need to periodically protect it from the elements and increase the lifespan of your investment.
